The Beaches of Turks & Caicos - Air / Hotel Packages or Hotel-only
British West Indies Vacation Packages for Families / Romantic Getaways / Diving / Relaxing

The Turks and Caicos offer the best of the Caribbean - in Atlantic waters. Island hop by ferry or rove on-island on a rented bike or scooter. One of the world's longest coral reefs, 230 miles of white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and a bounty of dive spots lure visitors to the Turks and Caicos' eight major islands, just east of the Bahamas. Bird sanctuary French Cay, underwater Columbus Landfall National Park and Caicos Conch Farm are among the major attractions of these legendarily friendly isles.

The two island groups are in the North Atlantic Ocean, southeast of the Bahamas, north of Hispaniola, and 914 kilometres (494 nmi) from Miami, at 21°45′N, 71°35′W. The territory is geographically contiguous to the Bahamas, but is politically a separate entity. The Caicos Islands are in the British West Indies and are separated by the Caicos Passage from the closest Bahamian islands, Mayaguana and Great Inagua.

  • Country Description
  • Entry/Exit Requirements
  • Safety and Security & more

  • The eight main islands and more than 20 smaller islands have a total land area of 616.3 square kilometres (238.0 sq mi), primarily of low, flat limestone with extensive marshes and mangrove swamps and 370 kilometres (230 mi) of beach front. The weather is usually sunny and relatively dry, but suffers frequent hurricanes.

The average temperature ranges between 75 and 85°F. From June to October, the temperature can reach into the 90's, especially in the late summer months. A constant trade wind keeps the climate at a very comfortable level.

A perfect climate, pristine beaches and soothing turquoise and emerald surf combine for the ideal vacation experience in Turks and Caicos. Made up of 40 different islands, only eight are still inhabited. Providenciales ("Provo") is the center of tourism with a vast choice of hotels, resorts and restaurants, to appeal to the most discerning traveler. Most of the out islands can be easily reached by boat from Provo. Still largely undiscovered, the Turks and Caicos Islands are ideal for a romantic escape, a relaxing family vacation, or adventure diving and whale watching. Some of the Caribbean's best diving can be found here due to the abundance of colorful sea life and impressive coral walls. Dive, snorkel, stroll, beachcomb, dine, dance, do everything, or do nothing.

My trip to the Caribbean: Turks & Caicos

    Unspoiled Beauty...
    By A Yahoo! Contributer, 08/20/06
Like a desert set in the Caribbean, the Turks and Caicos Islands are named for the wild cacti that inhabit them. These islands represent what is perhaps the last remaining unspoiled and easily accessible Caribbean destination. The secluded villas and private beaches of Providenciales ('Provo') offer the perfect romantic getaway for couples who are prepared to make their *own* nightlife, as on the islands it is nonexistent!

The Caicos Islands encompass four of the six administrative districts of the territory. Four of the six main islands are inhabited, plus two of the smaller islands:

Main islands, from West to East, with population estimates of 2006:

    • West Caicos (uninhabited since the early 1900s)
    • Providenciales (main urban center, with most of the population: 22 542)
    • North Caicos (population 1 895)
    • Middle Caicos (population 468)
    • Middle Caicos is home to an impressive chain of limestone caves (the largest in the Caribbean) and the steep, breathtaking limestone cliffside of Mudjidin Beach.  These natural wonders are subjects of many photos and must-see attractions when visiting Middle.  After exploring the caves you can have lunch on the beach and then end your day with snorkeling for sand dollars.
    • East Caicos (uninhabited since the early 1900s)
    • South Caicos (population 1 579)
    • Ambergris Cay (uninhabited up until 1997)

Inhabited smaller islands, in the Caicos Cays between Providenciales and North Caicos:

    • Pine Cay (tourist resort, population 30)
    • Parrot Cay (tourist resort, population 100)
