Parrot Cay & COMO Shambhala Retreat

Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos is the northern Caribbean's pre-eminent private island, wrapped in sweeps of sand and peaceful seas featuring the region's best spa and haute cuisine. It combines nature - 1000 unspoilt acres, including a mile-long powdered beach - with understated style and cosseting service.

The resort offers 60 guestrooms, suites, and beachside villas and houses cooled by both air conditioning and ceiling fans. All accommodations feature four-poster beds draped with white muslin curtains and covered by white spreads. Decor combines wood tones and cool whites, including tongue-in-groove pine walls painted white, bleached-wood ceilings, sisal area rugs, white muslin drapes, white muslin-covered upholstered seating, Balinese-style teak furniture, wicker-back deck chairs with pull-out footstools, and latticed-leather dressing benches.

Guestrooms and suites are located in seven two-story Mediterranean-style white buildings with red-tile roofs terraced into a hillside about 200 yards from the beach. Rooms and suites include terra-cotta-tile floors and feature wood balconies or ground floor porches furnished with Indonesian daybeds and minibars and providing garden or ocean views.

Overview

I visited Parrot Cay for 2 nights as part of a site inspection of Turks and Caicos hotels in Oct 08.

Parrot Cay is a unique and exquisite escape from everyday life. Although we were technically 'working', we were asked to experience the island as our clients would and we were made to feel incredibly welcome.

We stayed in the hotel rooms which have a 'colonial' feel to them and are are what I call understated luxury. Simply furnished but clean, comfortable with everthing you would need. The villas are another thing altogether and having seen a number of them, I can recommend them highly. They are privately owned and individually furnished but ar in the rental pool. Although individual they are all in keeping with the 'feel' of the resort and are extremely private.

The location of Parrot Cay is stunning and you will never struggle to find a private section of the beach. With a few non-motorised watersports on hand, the focus is on relaxing and the spa emphasises this. The treatment I had was fantastic in a stunning setting.

The service and staff were faultless and the food was superb with a choice of restaurants. The slightly poolside restaurant for delicious light lunches and asian cuisine in the evening and the main restaurant. Everything felt luxurius yet informal and relaxed.

I would not recommend Parrot Cay for children due to the lack of activities but the villas will suit families and there were children there during our visit and they were not made to feel out of place at all.

Overall I loved my stay there but consider a twin stay with another hotel in The Turks and Caicos such as Amanyara, Grace Bay Club, Regent Palms etc.

What to expect: Popular with entertainment and sports celebrities (the resort manages a secluded three-house compound for Bruce Willis on the island) as well as an international world-traveling clientele, Parrot Cay resort emphasizes privacy, relaxation, and health spa rejuvenation in a tranquil natural setting. Discreet staffers know when and when not to attend guests. The resort's boats dock well away from buildings and beach. Automobiles are not allowed. Natural sounds--breezes in palm trees, bird calls, the sand disturbed by the ocean--prevail.

Amenity highlights: Furnished with lounge chairs and widely spaced white umbrellas, a 1.5-mile beach lapped by the turquoise Atlantic Ocean consists of sand fine as sugar and nearly as white. Other unpopulated beaches rim Parrot Cay, and by boat or golf cart staff members transport guests to them on request. The resort's large, rectangular pool includes a zero-entry on one side and an infinity lip on the ocean side. The pool's weathered-wood sundeck offers teak lounges padded with thick, terry cloth-covered cushions and shaded by white umbrellas. On the deck's oceanside corners, wood-shingle shelters contain daybeds.

Insider tip: In addition to the two by the pool, six other wood-shingle shelters containing daybeds lie along the beach, each well separated from others for privacy and tranquility.
